Gardening
for Kids
Vegetable
gardening for me is more than
just a hobby. It's an activity that I look forward to once spring rolls
around.
My
introduction to growing vegetables occurred
when I was in grades 1 or 2. We were taught how to plant seeds and
watch
them germinate. I vividly recall how we would wet a paper towel, line
it
against a glass jar and place a few bean seeds between the jar and
paper
towel to see how they germinate. Then we would plant the seedling in a
container of soil.
I feel
children should be introduced to
gardening in elementary schools at an early age to create interest in
the
topic and to help them get a better understanding where the vegetables
they eat come from.
A good idea
for parents is to be actively
involved with gardening themselves, have their children participate
with
them in the planting or give their children a small area in the garden
to experiment and plant whatever they like.
